Katy Perry is getting ready to release her new concert film ‘Katy Perry: Part of Me,’ and now fans can watch a clip of the singer at age 18, talking about going through a “rebel phase” in her life.

The 2004 home movie footage, which premiered at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 3), shows young Perry with her parents. She asks her mother whether she’ll watch her on MTV one day and her mom says no. “Katy, I’m not gonna watch you if you have your clothes off,” she replied. Perry’s dad immediately calls her bluff.

Later, fans see the pop star talking about her ambitions. “I feel like I was never allowed to even think for myself, and all of a sudden, my heart wants to do all kinds of things,” she confesses. “I want to travel and experience other things outside of my comfort zone. I guess I’m just probably going through a rebel phase — I don’t know.”

Dear Young Katy, it wasn’t a phase. Fans can watch the full ‘Katy Perry: Part of Me’ documentary, directed by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, when it opens in theaters on July 5.
