Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to fly like Superman. It has been an idea that stuck with me, and I'm not alone. Some may want to fly like angels and some like birds, but the ability to fly without machines is part of our psyche.

There is a day for everything including my childhood dreams of flying. August 23rd is National Ride The Wind Day. It is a day to honor the first human-powered flight. Back in 1977, the first human-powered airplane took flight winning the Kremer Award. The aircraft, the MacCready Gossamer Condor, now rests at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.

In Wyoming, we have our fair share of wind. This should be the perfect day for our state. So we found a few wind-related activities to celebrate Ride the Wind day.

  • Hang Gliding
  • Skydiving
  • Kiteboarding
  • Fly a kite
  • Flying a paper airplane
  • Sticking your hand out a moving window and pretending it's an airplane

Here are somethings we think you should avoid doing for Ride The Wind day.

  • Using an umbrella in the wind
  • Carrying large sheets of wood above your head
  • Make your self a giant bird suit
  • Jumping off a building in parachute pants
  • Strapping yourself to a rocket
