'American Idol' season nine runner-up Crystal Bowersox has come out and said she's bisexual, less than a year after she announced she was divorcing her husband.

"I’ve been bisexual for as long as I can remember," she explained on 'Good Day LA.' "I remember being made fun of in junior high for that. It was something that was shameful, and it really shouldn’t be."

She added in another interview, "The more people who come out who are in the public eye, the better chance some high school school student has to love and accept themselves."

"I think 40 percent of the youth homeless population is LGBTQ, and it’s simply because they’re not accepted by their families," she said. "They’re kicked out of their homes, they feel shame and guilt. I just feel like that’s not what the holidays are about."

In response to this problem, Bowersox released the song 'Coming Out for Christmas,' the proceeds of which will be donated to the LGBT organization the Trevor Project.

You can listen to the song -- which is about "practicing tolerance and acceptance" -- below.
