A recall of over 8-million pounds of beef, because of allegations that a California producer used "diseased and unsound animals" in the production of its meat, has reached Wyoming.

According to documents released by the USDA, stores in the following areas are suspected, although not confirmed, to have received the beef in question:

Afton, Big Piney, Buffalo, Cheyenne, Greybull, Jackson, Kemmerer, Lovell, Mountain View, Pinedale, Powell, Sheridan, Thermopolis, and Worland.

The USDA says that, currently, no human illnesses have been attributed to the recalled meat, and officials with the Wyoming Department of Health confirm that they have also received no such reports.

Wyoming Department of Agriculture spokesperson, Derek Grant says that they are notifying the 16 businesses in the state that are believed to have recieved the recalled beef.

"Once we become aware of a recall situation, we make sure to call all the establishments that may have had that item, and make sure they pull it off their shelves," says Grant.  "We also like to encourage citizens of the state to make sure they keep an eye on what they have in their fridge, go through what they have, and if they have that item take it back or dispose of it."

The original recall was issued earlier this month with just about 25 retailers believed to have been affected, however now, the recall encompasses over a thousand retailers in several states.

The USDA says that beef carcasses and boxes bear the establishment number "EST. 527" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each box bears the case code number ending in “3” or “4.” The products were produced Jan. 1, 2013 through Jan. 7, 2014 and shipped to distribution centers and retail establishments nationwide.
