Brad Pitt wants to clarify comments made in Sunday’s edition of Parade magazine, in which he seems to say his marriage to Jennifer Aniston made him into a boring, pot-smoking coach potato.

“I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out,” Pitt said to the magazine about the time he was married to Aniston. “It started feeling pathetic. It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself. I think that my marriage [to Aniston] had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t.”

Although Pitt doesn’t deny saying this during his interview with Parade, he claims his words were taken out of context, and that it was his stagnant career — not his marriage to Aniston — that was bringing him down when they were together.

“It grieves me that this was interpreted this way,” Pitt said in a statement. “Jen is an incredibly giving, loving, and hilarious woman who remains my friend.”
