Local wildfire activity has forced cancellation of this year’s Camp Courage Wyoming planned for August 5-7 near Dubois, according to the Wyoming Department of Health.

Camp Courage Wyoming brings childhood cancer patients, their parents and siblings together to provide a Wyoming connection for families who travel around the country for specialized cancer treatment, said Jessica Perez, outreach coordinator with the WDH Wyoming Comprehensive Cancer Control Program.

The Lava Mountain Fire is located northwest of Dubois in the Shoshone National Forest. Camp Courage Wyoming is held near the Dubois/Union Pass area at Crooked Creek Guest Ranch, which was evacuated in late July.

“We are saddened to cancel this year’s camp, but it’s important we keep everyone safe,” Perez said. “Our thoughts are with the firefighters battling the fire and we look forward to future camps. All donations raised for this year will be kept and used next year.”

Camp Courage Wyoming was born through a partnership between Jason’s Friends Foundation and the Wyoming Cancer Coalition (WYCC). The first camp was held in 2012. Because the camps were funded through a cancer survivor’s cookbook, corporate sponsorships and private donations of time and materials, families attend at no cost.
