A woman was arrested on five criminal charges Monday after allegedly giving a THC-laced candy to a young girl in order to calm her down.

Vanessa R. Smith, 30, was booked on charges of child endangerment, child endangerment with methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and distribution to a person under 18 years of age.

Court documents say the Wyoming Department of Family Services called Casper police for assistance Monday morning after a report that a young girl had possibly eaten a THC gummy the night before.

A woman who cared for the girl on Monday reportedly noticed the child had bloodshot eyes, spoke slowly and was lethargic. A man who dropped the child off to the woman reportedly said Smith had given the girl a marijuana gummy the night before in order to calm her down.

The child also complained of stomach pains, according to the affidavit.

While the woman was watching the child, the child reportedly said she felt better and "doesn't talk like [Smith] anymore." The woman then called the Department of Family Services.

Under the supervision of a DFS agent, the child reportedly provided a urine sample that tested positive for THC. Officers took protective custody of the child shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.

Court documents say police officers found Smith as she was trying to collect the child from the woman who had been caring for her. Officers detained Smith and took her to the Casper Police Department.

Smith allegedly told officers she gave the girl a THC gummy to calm her down on Sunday night. Smith also reportedly admitted to smoking methamphetamine at her home.

A search of Smith's residence allegedly turned up numerous marijuana and methamphetamine pipes, methamphetamine residue inside a jeweler's baggie, THC gummies and unidentified white pills.

According to witness statements in the affidavit, Smith returned to Casper from Denver, Colo. on Sunday. She allegedly had a dispensary canister, which contained a number of red and green gummies shaped like marijuana leaves, and a new marijuana pipe.

Officers reportedly found that canister inside Smith's purse after Smith's friend took the purse to Smith as she spoke with officers at the Casper Police Department.
