Demi Lovato Tweets About Mental Illness, Eating Disorders
One thing we love about Demi Lovato is her willingness to be completely open with the public about her past struggles. From eating disorders to bi-polar disorder to drug abuse, Demi has always spoken with total transparency and candor, and we commend her for it.
The 'Really Don't Care' singer took to Twitter earlier today (Nov. 12) to deliver her second PSA about mental illness called the Mental Health Listening & Engagement Tour. (You can check it out above.) The point of the campaign is to let those suffering from bipolar disorder and depression know that there is always someone they can talk to, despite how isolating and lonely it can sometimes feel.
Considering the taboo nature that is the discussion of mental illness, one of Demi's goals with the campaign is to raise awareness and start a conversation about mental health: "The most important message to anybody watching this right now is that mental illness is something that you need to talk about, because the more that we talk about it the more people we can reach and raise awareness."
Demi then took to Twitter to address the common misconception that eating disorders are a choice:
She goes on to say: "Starving is not a "diet" and throwing up isn't something that only extremely thin men or women do. Eating disorders do not discriminate.. Neither does any other mental illness. These are deadly diseases that are taking lives daily. So please, let's be cautious of the words we use when discussing ED's and other mental illnesses."
