After days of heavy rain in China’s Anhui Province, residents of Huangshan City were treated to a “mirage” that turned their cityscape into an ethereal scene, the likes of which are normally reserved for movies and fairytales. As the post-storm mist descended on the Tunxi section of the Xin’an River, large groups gathered to marvel at buildings and landmarks that appeared to float on the river surrounded by clouds.

Perhaps just as striking as the images themselves is the perplexing coverage the story has received outside of China. The voice-over that accompanies this video from major British news agency ITN seems to indicate that none of the buildings in this video actually exist; that we’re actually looking at a barren landscape populated with buildings that aren’t actually there. Is that what’s going on here? Did we hear that right?
