If you loved ‘Divergent’ and are already totally on board with the cinematic adaptations of Veronica Roth’s young adult science fiction novels, then the trailer for the awkwardly titled ‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent’ is probably going to prove exciting. If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, prepare for 144 seconds that might as well be in a foreign language.

‘Insurgent’ (we’re just going to call it that from now on, okay?) picks up where the first film left off, with Shailene Woodley and her crew of attractive young people now in open rebellion against the likes of Kate Winslet. It bears a striking resemblance to ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,’ another Lionsgate-produced YA adaptation that ditched its central gimmick in a sequel so it could tell a story of young, pretty people forced to become soldiers in a strange, highly structured sci-fi dystopia.

While these movies may not carry the same cultural cache as ‘The Hunger Games’ movies, the first one was a hit and the second one looks like it’s going to play well to everyone who went and saw the first movie. With director Robert Schwentke now behind the camera (stepping in for Neil Burger) and presumably a bigger budget, this one looks bigger and glossier than its predecessor. You’ll lose track if you try to count the number of big, CGI action shots in this trailer.

And yet it all looks a little silly. Sillier than most modern YA movies, which face a constant uphill battle to be taken seriously. Still, it’s hard to get too annoyed with a movie series that gives someone as talented and promising as Woodley a chance to try out the whole action hero thing.

‘Insurgent’ is set top open on March 20, 2015. The shockingly impressive cast includes Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Miles Teller and Ray Stevenson. It also has Theo James and Jai ”Sam Worthington” Courtney. You can also check out the new poster below.
