Today, Wyoming Governor Matt Mead signed a new law requiring hospitals to screen newborns for congenital heart defects. To celebrate the signing, Mead welcomed Maverick Schutte, a 7-year-old boy from Cheyenne who was born with a rare condition called Tetralogy of Fallot.

Maverick has endured over 30 surgeries in his short life, including another open-heart procedure this summer. Last year, he made national news when he and former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz were featured on an award-winning documentary produced by the Major League Baseball Network.

Since then, Maverick has met and befriended athletes and musicians across the country. And now, he can call Governor Mead his friend. More importantly, the law he helped inspire could save another child's life.
