‘Rocky’ Actor Tony Burton’s Best Scene Was Filmed Right Here in Wyoming
This week, film fans are mourning the loss of Tony Burton, who passed away at the age of 78.
Burton will be fondly remembered for his role as "Duke", a boxing trainer who appeared in six Rocky movies. And his greatest on-screen moment was filmed right here in Wyoming.
In a 2008 interview, Burton stated that 'Rocky IV' was his favorite film in the franchise.
Located in Teton National Park near Jackson, Mormon Row was a homestead for settlers in the 1890s. Although the cabin where Rocky Balboa lived and trained in the movie was built specifically for the film, several scenes feature the original houses and barns from the area.
Another scene, Rocky's arrival in "Russia", was shot at the Jackson Hole Airport.
Filmed in the winter of 1985, the Wyoming weather wreaked havoc on production. Heavy snow and wind made it difficult to transport the cast, crew and equipment.
When sub-zero temperatures didn't cause cameras to freeze, the actors struggled. The classic scene where Paulie falls down in the snow wasn't scripted.
And this week, as we look back on the life and career of actor Tony Burton, we can proudly say that his epic motivational speech was filmed right here in the Cowboy State.
