CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Officials in Natrona County have identified a Casper man who police say shot himself in the head while officers sought to question him about shooting his ex-wife in the leg.

Coroner Connie Jacobson says that 28-year-old Jerry A. Orona died Saturday evening at Wyoming Medical Center.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at about 5 p.m. Saturday and found a woman had been shot in the leg. The woman identified Orona as her shooter and officers went to his residence.

Kebin Haller with Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation said Orona had taken cover near his residence when officers attempted to confront him. Officers heard a gunshot as they approached Orona. He died about two hours later.

DCI is investigating since police were on the scene when Orona shot himself.
