Wyoming Department of Transportation crews are installing 70 mph speed limit signs around the state, bringing new sections of highways up to the statutory speed limit for non-interstate highways in Wyoming, according to a news release.

Closer to central Wyoming, WYDOT crews in District 2 -- much of central Wyoming east to the Nebraska state line -- will be installing the signs on these roads:

Monday, April 11: U.S. Highway 20/26 from Casper to Shoshoni.

Tuesday, April 12: U.S. Highway 287/Wyoming Highway 789 from Muddy Gap to Sweetwater Station. This is part of an overall speed limit increase on this road from Rawlins to Wyoming Highway 28 just south of Lander, which will happen at a later date.

These changes in central Wyoming will affect about 90 miles of highway.

Until the new signs are installed, the existing posted speed limit remains in effect.

Installing the new signs is expected to take one day per highway.

WYDOT’s 511 Travel Information Service map at www.wyoroad.info will be updated to show each highway section increased to the 70 mph limit after the signs are installed.

WYDOT expects about 1,500 miles of highways raised to 70 mph by the end of April, and another 1,000 miles by the end of May. Work will continue through the summer.

The Legislature approved the increase in speed limits in its most recent session.
