A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of making terroristic threats, Sheridan police announced Wednesday evening.

According to a news release from the Sheridan Police Department, Sheridan High School students told school staff at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday about Instagram posts which reportedly implied a threat to the school.

School staff were aware of the posts before school began, and a school resource officer was notified by staff members.

One post consisted of a stock image of the high school, police say, which was apparently downloaded from the school website.

The student to whom the Instagram account was registered told police that his account had been hacked. The student allowed investigators to inspect his cell phone, and police say they found no evidence on that phone.

The student, who police say was never a suspect, was quickly cleared. He and his family fully cooperated with police, according to the release.

Officers were able to identify a suspect, develop probable cause for an arrest, and take the 16-year-old suspect into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of making terroristic threats, which would be a felony.

The suspect was taken to a juvenile detention facility.

Sheridan police emphasize that all area schools are safe to attend.
