Wyoming Golf Returns to Action at the Arizona N.I.T.
LARAMIE -- The University of Wyoming men’s golf team is back in action following its winter hiatus. The Pokes travel to Tucson, Arizona, for the Arizona N.I.T. on Monday and Tuesday.
The competition spans 54 holes at Omni Tucson National, which is a par 72 that stretches 7,200 yards. Thirty-Six holes will be contested on Monday, and the final 18 holes wrap up on Tuesday. It’ll be a shotgun start both days beginning at 8:30 a.m.

It’s a 14-team field. Arizona, BYU, Fresno State, Iowa State, LMU, Missouri, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts, Santa Clara, St. Mary’s, UC Santa Barbara, USC and Wyoming are the teams slated to take part.
As stated, it has been a while since the Cowboys last participated in an event. The Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational in early November stands as the last tournament, and head coach Joe Jensen is excited to get back after it this week.
“I want to go and have a good practice, have a good training process, so we can get back into our routine and create a good foundation,” Jensen said. “Good practice habits, our process, all those things are what make up a good result. I don’t want to put a lot of pressure on the guys, but I feel good, and we have the ability to play well this week.”
Wyoming played well during the fall season. As a team, the Cowboys finished in the top 10 three different times with the high-water mark being a fourth-place finish at Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
Within those strong team showings were a number of solid individual performances. Kristof Panke boasts the best of those after he placed third at the Palouse Collegiate with a 199 (-14), which tied the school record for lowest score and the lowest score in relation to par. Panke added another top-five finish at Mark Simpson.
Jaren Calkins possessed a trio of top-10 finishes in the fall. His best occurred at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational where he placed fourth. Patrick Azevedo has one top-10 finish to his name this season, recording a tie for ninth at the Palouse.
Davis Seybert rounds out the top-10 placers for Wyoming this past fall. He won the individual tournament at Gene Miranda.
After their trip to Tucson, the Cowboys next compete at their own event – the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. That runs from Feb. 24-26 at the Classic Club.
Calkins was invited to tee it up at the Genesis Collegiate Showcase on Feb. 10. Due to the southern California wildfires that event has been relocated to Torrey Pines.
