Since I'm just starting to get into it, I've decided I need to know how to get started and what to look for when gathering scrap. I turned to YouTube and Big Daddy Scrap.com for information and tips on how to get started.

Here are five tips from Big Daddy Scrap.com on the best scrapping practices.

Separate the metals - Keeping all the metals together may result in lower prices, researching the best types of metals will help you in the long run.

Protect your scrap when storing - Ferrous metals will begin to rust if they're in the weather conditions. When the metal rusts over time, it can reduce the weight by eating away the metal.

Focus on non-ferrous metals - Ferrous metals contain iron (cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel) and are less valuable than Non-Ferrous Metals (copper, brass, zinc, lead, aluminum).

Watch the price - Just like the stock market, the price of scrap will go up and down. Keeping an eye on the prices will ensure you get the best price for your scrap.

Find free scrap - If you're buying scrap materials, you may be paying too high a price. Many times, people are looking to get rid of items that are just lying around the house.

To help with the separating process, I jumped on YouTube and found many videos full of tips and ideas on preparing scraps for the yard.
