This Is Easily The Second Most Spoken Language In Wyoming

In Wyoming, if you're out and about and hear someone speaking a language other than English, it could catch you off guard. It's not uncommon to hear different languages in the larger tourist areas, but it's not common in the less touristy parts of Wyoming.

As of 2022, 82.5% of Wyomingites are White, and the second most common ethnicity is Hispanic at 10.5%.

Stats show that only 6.76% of Wyoming households don't speak English as their first language, which is well below the national average of 21.7%.

There are 13 states in the western part of the United States, and it's not a big surprise that Wyoming is 10th on the list for the Spanish-speaking population. Only Alaska, Hawaii, and Montana have fewer Spanish-speaking residents.

Since the world is diverse and many languages are spoken, Wyoming adopted the new Wyoming Foreign Language and Performance Standards in 2013, which require students to be familiar with a foreign language.

The three Standards are the three communicative modes (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational) and
emphasize that the goal of language instruction is the development of students’ communicative skills.
Students learn to not only communicate in the language, but they also understand how to interact with native
speakers using appropriate cultural behaviors, such as gestures and body language.

All students will be able to use a language other than English to engage in meaningful conversation, understand and interpret spoken and written language, present information, concepts, and ideas, and gain an understanding of other cultures. Through language study, they will connect with other content areas, compare the language and culture studied with their own, and participate effectively in a global world.

• Communicates linguistically and culturally in more than one language at a level of language proficiency to function in a
variety of situations and settings.
• Participates effectively in a global world.
• Exhibits attitudes, values, and skills that indicate a positive disposition and understanding of cultural differences and that
enhance cross-cultural communication.
• Values language learning for its long-term worth in fostering personal, work-related, and/or financial success in our
increasingly interconnected world.
