Wyoming Bill Banning School Trans Athletes Moves Forward
Townsquare Media
A bill that would ban trans athletes from playing girls or women's sports in Kindergarten through college has passed the Wyoming House and has been received for introduction in the Wyoming Senate.
You can read House Bill 60 here.
It's sponsored by Rep. Martha Lawley [R-Big Horn, Washakie counties]
It would require that students only play on girls or women's sports teams if they were born as females.. It would expand an existing state law that already bans such trans athletes from high school sports in Wyoming. It would apply to intercollegiate, interscholastic and intramural sports, and to team sports such as basketball as well as individual sports like golf or tennis.

Lawley told a committee hearing on the proposal a couple of weeks ago that the legislation was sparked in part by the University of Wyoming women's volleyball team forfeiting game against San Jose State in 2024 because the California school had a transgender player.
At least two other college volleyball teams took similar actions in scheduled games versus San Jose State.
The ACLU of Wyoming is opposed to the bill. A statement on it's website says This bill isn’t about protecting fairness in sports. It’s a bill that violates the United States Constitution and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which protects all students – including those who are transgender – from discrimination based on sex.
The House vote in favor of House Bill 60 on third reading was 51-6 with five members absent.
