The Super Volcano under Yellowstone only erupts once or twice every million or two million years

If you felt an earthquake in the Casper area today, you are not alone. The USGS reported a moderate quake was registered just to the northwest of the city this morning

I will admit that I'm an earthquake nerd, so I tend to follow earthquakes pretty much all around our region. However, I don't recall ever seeing one happen in the Black Hills of South Dakota...until today.

It's not likely to have caused any real damage, but there was a larger than normal earthquake that was felt near Grand Teton National Park today.

On the morning of January 6th (Wednesday), Wyoming received one of its first earthquakes of 2021, but it seems that pretty much no one noticed, and most certainly no one in Cheyenne.

It was reported as a magnitude of 3.6.

We have to be careful not to jump to apocalyptic conclusions when there's an earthquake in Wyoming. But, I will admit that the one that struck just west of Rock Springs this morning was unusual.

I must confess that I am a volcano nerd. I've been fascinated with them dating back to the Mt St. Helens eruption in 1980. My fascination with this part of geology led me to ask the question what would it really take to make the Yellowstone supervolcano erupt? This is what I found.

Wyoming has earthquakes all the time. Most are in the western part of the state near the seismically-active Yellowstone. But, a moderate quake has just struck where we don't usually see earthquakes just south of the Bighorns.

The USGS is reporting that a major earthquake has shaken Idaho and parts of Montana.

There was a major earthquake this morning that rocked downtown Salt Lake City.

We get a lot of earthquakes in Wyoming. Most are near the very seismically active area near Yellowstone. That's why it was a bit of a surprise to learn that an earthquake just occurred in southern Wyoming near Saratoga.
