A Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper has returned to work after an investigation cleared him in the shooting and of a woman during the pursuit of a wrong-way driver on Interstate 25 near Glenrock.

The Converse County Attorney's Office decided last month not to charge Doug Beran in the incident, and he returned to active duty Feb. 11.

The case started on the day before Thanksgiving when Mills Police tried to initiate a traffic stop of Missouri fugitive Russell Anderson, who was suspected of forcing his passenger, Michelle Essig, to engage in prostitution.

Anderson drove to I-25 and headed south. The chase was joined by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

At mile post 165, Anderson crossed the median and began driving south in the northbound lanes of traffic.

Beran started firing at the vehicle. Essig, who was pregnant at the time, was struck by a bullet in the leg. She underwent surgery for non-life-threatening injuries.

Since then, Anderson has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant woman, one felony count of promoting prostitution, and misdemeanor counts of reckless endangering, eluding police officers and reckless driving.

He remains in custody awaiting trial.
