Bruno Mars Talks About ‘Old Fashioned’ ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ Video
Bruno Mars has a vintage rock n’ roll feel to his song ‘Locked Out of Heaven,’ and the video treatment reflects it. The old school, almost dizzying feel of the video had a lot of fans adjusting their monitors to no avail, and that’s just want Mars wanted.
“My friend Cameron Duddy directed it, he did ‘The Lazy Song’ with me,” Mars told MTV. “But this is different, as you’ll see. There’s no dancing monkeys on this one!” Indeed!
Mars likes that there’s no choreography, plot nor love interest in this video, a stark contrast to his previous works (which usually had him serenading girls or dancing with primates). “The concept is just old-fashioned fun,” Mars said. “No story line, it’s not me singing to a girl, you get a good sense of what you’re going to get live. It’s very VHS-y. I love that man, it takes me back to my childhood, when the tracking is off and the color is off, there’s a beauty in that. You’d have to stand by the TV with, like, aluminum foil all over you.”
Though Mars’ ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ is one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year, he didn’t want the video to have that much fanfare if it meant not getting out to his fans. He explained, “It was finished a couple of days ago … you know, a lot of times people want to do a big premiere or something like that. But I feel like, with the Internet, I have the luxury to go straight to the fans and say, ‘Here it is.’”
