Child Drowns In Flaming Gorge Reservoir [Update]

UPDATE: Sweetwater County authorities have identified the drowning victim as 4 year old Natalie Gibson. The other members of the fishing party have been identified as her mother, 23 year old Keriane Mosher, as well as 27 year old Jeff  Harrison and a 16 year old who authorities have declined to identify, all of Rock Springs.

A four year old girl drowned in Flaming Gorge Reservoir Saturday afternoon, according to  Sweetwater County authorities.

A joint release from Sweetwater County Sheriff Rich Haskell and County Coroner Dale Majhanovich on Sunday said the names of those involved were being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Investigators were told by witnesses that the victim was in a Jeep Wrangler that was parked back from the shoreline near where U.S. Forest Service Road 50 meets the water line of the gorge about 14 miles south of Green River. She was with a party of four people, including the victim, fishing from the shore.

The Jeep suddenly rolled into the water and submerged completely. One of the other members of the fishing party attempted to stop the vehicle and was injured in the process. The group attempted to walk out and was eventually able to reach authorities by cell phone.

Divers located the jeep on it's top in about 15 feet of water and recovered the victim's body. Initial reports that the Jeep fell through the ice into the gorge were inaccurate, according to authorities.

The case remains under investigation, and Majhanovich says an autopsy is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday in Loveland, Colorado.
