Discover The Legacy Behind Wyoming’s Legendary Cato Ranch
Wyoming has some incredible ranches across the state, and from time to time, one of them will hit the market. Earlier in 2026, the legendary Pathfinder Ranch just outside of Casper was sold.
Another historic Wyoming ranch that's been on the market since June of 2025 is the Cato Ranch in the Bighorns near Sheridan. The 7,447-acre ranch has 6,447 deeded acres, 640 state-leased acres, and 360 privately leased acres and is listed for just under $65 million.
The ranch is roughly 20 miles west of Sheridan, and has been around since before Wyoming became a state. When it was established in 1876, it was known as the PK Ranch. In 2001, the ranch was purchased by Wayland H. Cato Jr., and it has since been a large cattle ranch with private water rights and rich Wyoming history.
Icon Global Founder & CMO Bernard Uechtritz, whose Sheridan office is representing the property, said in a Facebook post last summer.
Not only is the Cato Ranch a prized and coveted piece of history of the American West, it is also a testament to the stewardship of Wayland Henry Cato, Jr. as a beloved modern-day pioneer and entrepreneur; the successful and respected cattle operation is testament to the integrity of and professional management by long-time Ranch manager Dennis Elchlinger. The combination of soil fertility, water irrigation, rotational grazing system and superb ranch management all provide the Cato Ranch with an above average carrying capacity. It is indeed a stunningly beautiful and exceptional historic property which Icon is honored to represent
