Three Years Ago It Was Minus 42 In Wyoming—What’s Happening?
Let's roll back the tape and look at the overnight low temperature in Casper on December 22nd, 2022. It was -42°. This record-breaking cold occurred during a severe Arctic blast that impacted much of the United States
What a difference a few years make. On December 22nd, 2025, the high temperature for the day was 60°F.
THAT IS A 102 DEGREE DIFFERENCE!
DON'T PANIC! The weather is always changing. It never stays the same. Let's look at the reasons for these differences between then and now.
North of Wyoming, a series of high and low pressure systems are swirling and twirling around and interacting with each other. How those systems line up determines what sort of weather gets shot our way.
NOTICE: In the chart above, the high-pressure systems on either side and the high pressure below.
Some of you have noticed that winter is all around us. Even the western parts of Wyoming are getting plenty of snow. The positioning of those high and low pressure systems is causing winter to go around us, while the rest of the country is cold and miserable.
In the chart below, you can see the weather is on the west coast, but it just can't get to us. It's being blocked by those high-pressure systems.
It can't stay this way forever. At some point, changes will happen. Until then, many western states like Wyoming are being deprived of some much much-needed snow.
As for when that will happen, regional weatherman Don Day says we will have to wait a couple of weeks, at least. We will keep you posted.
