Marijuana Decriminalization Bill Passes First Hurdle In Wyoming
A bill to decriminalize possession of up to 1 ounce of marijuana was passed out of the House Judiciary Committee today in Cheyenne.
Sponsored by Representative Jim Byrd, a Democrat from Cheyenne, the bill would impose fines of $250 for up to ½ ounce, and $500 for 1 full ounce. But it would take the option of arrest and jail time off the table.
Many law enforcement groups oppose the bill, but supporters argue that the costs of jail time, or even probation outweigh the seriousness of the offense.
But the bill faces several votes, and potentially strong opposition before it could become law.
