American Band Maroon 5 was announced to be the Super Bowl Halftime performers for the 2019 Super Bowl on February 3rd, but they weren't the first choice of over a million supporters on Change.org, who put together a petition to ask that the halftime performance feature an homage to a cartoon sponge. However, there's still a chance that the reference will still make it into the coveted performance slot.

The creator of Spongebob Squarepants, Stephen Hillenburg, passed away in November of 2018, and as a tribute to his contribution to cartoon animation, 1.1 million people signed the petition to ask for the song "Sweet Victory," by David Glen Eisley to be played during halftime. The song was made popular by the Spongebob Episode "Band Geeks," in which a group of intrepid musicians in Bikini Bottom perform the song during halftime of the "Bubble Bowl."

Maroon 5 released a teaser for their performance during the historic sporting event, and in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, the iconic sponge made an appearance, leading many fans to speculate that they will get their wish for a Hillenburg tribute after all.
