Simon Cowell Confirms One Direction’s Louis’ Baby News, Addresses Zayn’s Label Rumors, And Reveals Future Of The Band
In a particularly enlightening interview with The Sun on Sunday July 19, it looks like music mogul Simon Cowell both confirmed One Direction's Louis Tomlinson's baby news, as well as finally set the record straight on the rumors that Zayn Malik had been dropped by his former band's record label, Syco Records, after his departure from the group.
In the exclusive interview that took place backstage at Wembley Arena while filming the X Factor, Cowell revealed to a reporter that he told Tomlinson, 23, to "man up" upon learning the singer was expecting a child with girlfriend Briana Jungwirth.
"I said to him, 'You man up. You’re fortunate because you're in a position to be able to look after the baby and not worry too much about that,'" Cowell explained to The Sun. "But I also told him, 'I've received bad calls in my life but this is not one of them. This is your business but I'm here for you.'"
But if anyone is wondering if the news of the pregnancy disappointed Cowell, it didn't. The band's mentor stressed during the interview that Tomlinson's baby news is a positive thing, and not something that should be taken as bad news for either Tomlinson or One Direction. "He didn't kill anyone. He got someone pregnant," Cowell explained. "It happens every day all over the world. Again, Louis has got great family around him and, look, it's a plus, not a negative."
In addition to discussing Louis, the music producer also revealed that One Direction might be heading for a little break—if they want it, of course. "In terms of the band, they've got enough hits now they can take some time off and do some other stuff they want to do," he said. "Then I hope they'll have a little bit of time apart and want to get back together again. It's a fun job, but it’s absolutely their decision."
And since Cowell was clearly on a roll with the revelations, he also confirmed during the interview that the rumors surrounding Malik and Syco Records were true: the former One Direction member has indeed been dropped from the label.
"Well, because it was his decision to leave the group and we hadn’t asked him to do it, I felt my main responsibility was to the band," Cowell shared, adding, "They didn't ask for it to happen either and I did sign One Direction as a group."
But if you're worrying about Malik's future music career, don't fret, because Cowell was quick to add, "But luckily within Sony there are a lot of labels who are really good. I had a feeling there was one particular label who would love to have him and they did."
So there: Louis is expecting a baby, One Direction might take a hiatus if they feel like it, and Zayn has been dropped from Syco, but it's okay because he's already found a new label! Okay now, directioners, take a breath—that was a lot for a Sunday night.
