The Roots Being Sued by Ex-Bass Player Leonard ‘Hub’ Hubbard
The Roots are usually not caught up in legal issues, but the legendary band has found itself being sued by a former member.
According to TMZ, ex-bass player Leonard “Hub” Hubbard has slapped the Roots with a lawsuit claiming the group has cut him out financially since he left in 2007. Hubbard joined the Philadelphia-based crew in 1992 and had an impressive 15-year run with them as their bassist. He famously appeared in the Roots' videos "The Next Movement" and "The Seed (2.0)," among others.
Hub says that in 2007 he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, and left the band to battle his illness. The musician claims that as part of his deal with the group, he would continue to get paid as a co-owner. However, according to his suit, he was informed in 2014 that he was going to lose his health insurance and his financial cut.
Since then, of course, the Roots have gone on to become the backing band on NBC's late-night talk show, Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Hub feels left out and believes he deserves a piece of the revenue from the group. According to TMZ, Hub is suing founding Roots members -- Questlove and Black Thought -- and their new manager.
Attorneys for Questlove and Black Thought had no comment on the matter. If you are unsure who Leonard "Hub" Hubbard is, he's the guy on the far right (pictured, below).
