Tupac Shakur Hologram Could Join Dr. Dre + Snoop Dogg on Tour
The Tupac Shakur hologram was such a big hit at the Coachella Music Festival that talks are underway to bring it on tour with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The Wall Street Journal reports that reps for Dre and Snoop are figuring out the logistics to bring the virtual Tupac on a proposed joint trek.
There are several options on the table. One possibility would be a stadium tour with other hip-hop stars including Eminem, Wiz Khalifa and 50 Cent. Another option is to stage a limited tour featuring Dre, Snoop and the holographic Tupac in smaller venues. However, the source told the Wall Street Journal, that while a tour may happen, it is “not guaranteed.”
Ed Ulbrich, the COO of Digital Domain Media Inc., who help create the virtual Tupac, says the late rap icon’s Coachella performance was only a hint of what they can produce with the technology. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “Dre has a massive vision for this.”
The virtual Tupac became a viral video sensation after he performed ‘Hail Mary’ and ’2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted’ with Snoop at the Coachella Music Festival on Sunday (April 15). Although it’s been widely reported that Tupac was a 3-D hologram illusion, it was actually a 2-D image created by Digital Domain, which cost an estimated $100,000 to $400,000 to produce.
Nevertheless, Tupac’s performance was one of the most surrealist moments at this past weekend’s festival. Even Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, reportedly was thrilled to see her son onstage again.
The virtual Tupac will make a return appearance next weekend during Dre and Snoop’s headlining set at Coachella on April 22. Don’t miss it!
