UPDATE: Police Charge Donald Johns With First-Degree Murder; He Is Being Held On $1 Million Bond

Prosecutors have charged Donald Johns with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his roommate on Sunday, according to court records.

At his initial appearance in Natrona County Circuit Court on Monday, Judge Steven Brown ordered Johns held on a $1 million bond because prosecutors said he had a record of multiple violent felonies in Texas and Colorado.

Prosecutors also said they would not seek the death penalty in this case.

However, if Johns is convicted of first-degree murder, he could face a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Johns, 37, told the court he has lived in the Casper area for about a year.

He originally had been charged with second-degree murder.

The case began when Casper police responded to a report of a death at an address in the 300 block of North Jackson Street about 12:40 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from Capt. Steve Freel.

Johns was arrested later in Evansville.
