Retailer JC Penney has announced which stores they intend to close, and the list includes a Wyoming location. The retailer had announced in February they intended to close up to 140 stores across the country in an effort to "optimize its national retail operations as part of the Company’s successful return to profitability." The list of stores to be closed was released Friday, March 17th, and includes the location in downtown Sheridan.

The JC Penney stores in Casper, Cheyenne, and Kemmerer are not on the closure list. The Kemmerer store was JC Penny's very first store. It opened as the Golden Rule Store in 1902.

Nationwide, JC Penney Company announced the would be closing 138 stores, one supply chain facility, and relocating another such facility.They estimated some 5,000 positions would be impacted by the closures, which are expected to occur in June. The company says they are working on identifying relocation opportunities within the company, and will provide support services for eligible employees who would be leaving. Most of the affected stores will begin liquidation April 17th.
