Someone thought Forest Whitaker pulled a Winona Ryder.

Except instead of Saks, they thought he stole from a sandwich shop. Dude, seriously? Seriously?

When Whitaker was leaving the Milano Deli on the Upper East Side of New York City that he was accused of swiping something off of a shelf.

For the record, Whitaker is not only an Oscar winner, but also a millionaire. This isn't to say rich people don't steal (remember Lindsay Lohan before she went broke?), but come on.

And it gets worse.

The employee who accused Whitaker of stealing actually frisked him. A store employee -- not a cop.

Whitaker's rep told TMZ, "This was an upsetting incident given the fact that Forest did nothing more than walk into the deli. What is most unfortunate about this situation is the inappropriate way store employees are treating patrons of their establishment. Frisking individuals without proof/evidence is a violation of rights."

While in any other person's case, that would reek of a lawsuit, Whitaker doesn't need the money ... and apparently is stocking up on quality karma. "Forest did not call the authorities at the request of the worker who was in fear of losing his employment," the rep noted.

"Forest asked that, in the future, the store change their behavior and treat the public in a fair and just manner.”

In case you weren't sure how to define "class act," just scroll up and take a good look at this guy.
