‘Magic Mike XXL’ Trailer: The Boys Are Back, and This Time They’ve Got Puns
The first teaser for Magic Mike XXL was a glorious thing of hilarious beauty, perfectly deploying Ginuwine’s “Pony” and promising that yes, this is a sequel we want to see. Now the first full trailer has landed online, and it is super pun-heavy, but also pretty charming and funny, as the gang returns with a few new additions for a rowdy road trip adventure.
The new trailer actually delivers some plot this time around, but for a certain contingency of Magic Mike fans, the plot is secondary to all that shirtless, dancing dude action. For those interested in the story, the guys are making a “pilgrimage” to a big stripper convention for one last hurrah, and just when Mike thought he was out, well you know how the saying goes.
The trailer also delivers some incredibly silly puns, like how they wanted to avoid showing the best, uh, parts of the movie, but found it very, very…hard. Then there’s the social media hashtag they encourage fans to use: #ComeAgain
Yes, it’s some seriously corny double entendre, but if you’ve ever been to a male strip club, you know this is very much in keeping with their whole mission statement.
Along with Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Kevin Nash, the cast also features Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, Andie MacDowell, Amber Heard and Jada Pinkett Smith. Magic Mike XXL is based on a screenplay by Tatum and his partner Reid Carolin, with Gregory Jacobs (Steven Soderbergh’s assistant director) at the helm and Soderbergh himself serving as executive producer and cinematographer.
Magic Mike XXL hits theaters on July 1.
