Salaries for each state's public employees are often tied to the states economic well being.  But when it comes to the highest paid public employee in your state, you won't have to look very far at all.

If we asked who the highest paid public employee is in Wyoming, who would you guess?  Governor Mead?  You might think that, but he's not even close to the highest paid public employee.

In fact, regardless of which state you're in a vast majority of the highest paid public employees across the country are college football or men's basketball coaches.

For Wyoming, Head Football Coach Craig Bohl is by far the highest paid public employee at $1.4 million as of January 2017.

Here are the highest paid public employees for each of our neighboring states:

Colorado - Mike Macintire, head coach at Colorado University makes $3.25 million a year

Idaho - Bryan Harsin, head coach at Boise State University makes $1.35 million a year

Montana - Clayton Christian at $300k a year is the Higher Education commissioner for the Montana University system.

Nebraska - Scott Frost, head coach for the University of Nebraska makes $5 million a year.

South Dakota - Mary Nettleman at $577k a year is the dean of the University of South Dakota's Sanford School of Medicine.

Utah - Kyle Whittingham, head football coach at the University of Utah makes $3.3 million a year.

Alabama - Nick Saban, head coach at the University of Alabama is the highest paid public employee of them all, earning a staggering $11.1 million a year.
