Wyoming’s Weird Public Restroom Law

"Restrooms are for paying customers only". If you see that sign in Wyoming, that business is violating state law.

According to a legal brief published this year by WyLiberty.org, there is statute in the Wyoming criminal code prohibiting any establishment from "charging a person a fee to use the toilet".

Businesses who don't provide public restrooms are well within their rights. However, when they require a purchase in exchange for access, those establishments are, technically, committing a crime.

Wyoming College of Law graduate Casandra Craven cited the law in her recent essay “Criminal Law in Wyoming: An Overview and Analysis of Possible Reforms“.

Craven believes that the public restroom statute, and other seldom enforced laws on the books, should be removed.
