2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards: Kanye West Earns 17 Nominations
Kanye West dominated the hip-hop world in 2012 and was rewarded with a whopping 17 nominations for the 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards. West’s 17 nods are amazing considering the show only has 19 total categories.
Following behind West are 2 Chainz (who takes his place among the greats with 13 nominations) and Drake (who scored 11). West’s widely-varied noms include Best Video of the Year for ‘Mercy,’ Impact Track for ‘Murder to Excellence’ with Jay-Z, MVP of the Year, Hustler of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Video Director of the Year.
The most awkward category has to be Best Live Performer, where Kanye competes against his collaboration with Jay-Z, the Throne. Who does Kanye root for in that category? Does he want to win as a solo artist, or for his team-up with his ‘N—-s in Paris’ partner?
One of the big oversights seems to be Nicki Minaj, who received just one nomination, and that wasn’t even for her music. She’s up for the Made You Look Award, which recognizes the most fashionable artist, against West, 2 Chainz, Big Sean and A$AP Rocky.
The 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards take place on Sept. 29 at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center and air on Oct. 9. Comedian Mike Epps hosts for the fourth year in a row.
