‘Avengers: Endgame’ Is Still Three Hours Long, Confirm the Russo Brothers
Avengers: Endgame was three hours long at the last update we got, back in November. But a lot can change in three months of editing. Characters might get chopped down. Storylines could be cut. Test audiences could react strongly to the lack of certain characters, or the abundance of others. In this case, though, it seems like not much has changed.
Via Collider, Endgame co-director Joe Russo says despite three more months of post-production world, the film remains around three hours long. His exact quote:
Right now, we think the movie is playing well and we’ve had great responses from our test audiences and we’re feeling very good about where it is. We’re still doing work to it. We’re not done with it. Again, this is a culmination film of 22 movies, it’s a lot of storytelling to work into it. Emotion is an intrinsic part of that to us. When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments with the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate. This one, in particular, feels like three hours worth of real estate.”
Avengers: Infinity War was 150 minutes and it’s hard to imagine the new film being shorter than that one, even if the Russos did find a way to trim a little out of it. As they note, this one film is supposed to tie a bow around more than 20 previous movies. If we get out of the theater in less than five hours, we’re getting off easy. Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26.
