CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — State game managers are monitoring multiple young bighorn sheep that have wandered in and near Casper recently.

Some may have to be killed if they come into contact with domestic sheep or goats.

Casper Game and Fish wildlife management coordinator Justin Binfet says bighorn sheep can contract fatal illnesses such as pneumonia from domestic sheep or goats.

Wildlife managers worry that young bighorn sheep that pick up diseases might expose their larger herds to it, resulting in more bighorn sheep eventually dying.

The studies show almost 30 percent of young rams wander from their herd.

If a ram doesn't find a mate or another herd to join, it often will return to its original herd.
