‘Black Panther’ Crosses $1 Billion Mark
It's already been almost a month since Black Panther released in theaters but the film is showing no signs of slowing down. After breaking a number of records, Black Panther has now passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
The Ryan Coogler-directed film becomes only the 33rd movie to ever gross $1 billion and is Disney's 16th film to reach the milestone. Black Panther also becomes the fifth Marvel movie to accomplish the feat, joining The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War.
Domestically, Black Panther has grossed $521 million, making it the ninth-highest releases of all time. As far as internationally, the film is aiming to hit the $500 million mark this weekend, thanks to a strong debut in China, Variety reports.
Last weekend, Black Panther continued to hold the top spot at the box office, beating out Red Sparrow, Death Wish, Game Night and Peter Rabbit. As of Friday (March 9), the film still holds the No. 1 spot after A Wrinkle in Time opened with $10.2 million.
In February, Coogler wrote a letter for the fans of the film, thanking them for coming out to see the movie during its opening weekend.
"I am struggling to find the words to express my gratitude at this moment, but I will try," Coogler wrote in his letter addressed to moviegoers. "Film-making is a team sport. And our team was made up [of] amazing people from all over the world who believed in this story. Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a film about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent."
