Wyoming has a beautiful golden capital dome. YES, that gold is real. It's a thin leaf layover that is very durable. It is so thin that it really does not add much weight.

So, since it's gold, how much is it worth?

The exact current value of the gold on the Wyoming State Capitol dome is difficult to determine, but the most recent restoration in 2019 used approximately 7 total ounces of gold leaf.

While the material cost can be calculated based on the current price of gold, the total value is higher due to the complex, expert labor involved in applying the gold leaf to the copper dome.

The value of the gold on the Wyoming State Capitol dome is currently estimated to be about $18,480, but this is only an estimate of the raw material's value, not its historical or cultural worth.

Wyoming State Capitol, as well as its dome, went through a recent restoration, completed in 2019, that uses 24-karat gold leaf over a copper dome. The gilding was done by The Gilders' Studio, using about 7 ounces of gold for the project. That's not much gold when you think of it. It is really a thin film.

Before gilding, craftsmen with Renaissance Roofing, Inc. finished the decorative pieces on the upper sections of the Capitol dome. Due to the extensive damage, the original pieces were removed and recreated from copper and later painted to match the rest of the entablature on the Capitol.
