Madonna, Nicki Minaj + M.I.A. Rock Pom Poms in ‘Give Me All Your Luvin" Video
Madonna‘s highly anticipated video for ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’,’ her collaboration with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., is both a twisted look at the high school fantasy and a blatant promotion for her Super Bowl performance. The clip opens with text: “Fans can make you famous, a contract can make you rich, the press can make you a superstar, but only luv can make you a player.”
Immediately after, M.I.A. and Minaj appear with pompoms alongside other cheerleaders with creepy doll-like faces (the second in a series of videos featuring Minaj with that motif). M.I.A. is clad in a varsity jacket, while Minaj dons a cheerleader-style dress. Madonna makes her grand entrance, busting down a pink door to a house and strutting out with a stroller, which she quickly abandons. Here’s hoping Child Protective Services doesn’t watch this.
Gold glitter begins to rain out of the sky as she walks down the street, and faceless football players pop out umbrellas and shed her coat, exposing Madge in a skintight black leather leotard. (Do we expect anything less?) They show more chivalry, using their own varsity jackets to cover the sidewalk as to not let the Queen step in “puddles” of the shiny stuff.
Soon it gets weird: Madonna walks alone, and a car pulls alongside and a passenger actually tries attempting a drive by on her! The football players jump in front of her and take the bullets on her behalf and she struts on, seemingly oblivious to the attempts on her life.
The team then lifts Madonna into an apartment window. Upon entering, she’s transformed into the late ’80s, early ’90s version of herself: cropped blonde curls, white lace, red lipstick and her then-signature mole. Minaj matches Madge in style and begins her verse. We’re once more exposed to the dollfaced cheerleaders, who are imbibing on vodka and kissing. M.I.A. grinds on two football players as she spits her brief rhyme.
Madonna exits the fete, flanked by more football players (seriously, how big is this team?) who carry her around. Eventually they lift her into the air amid fireworks and celebration, and the shot shifts to Madge against a brick wall. She’s carrying a baby doll — which she tosses offscreen. The closing shot reads “Touchdown!” Kids, please don’t try this at home.
The video is eccentric, amusing and at times baffling, but it somehow works. We can’t wait until Sunday to see these dolls come to life live!
