If I were to ask you which town in Wyoming had the most car theft, who would you guess?

The answer is not really shocking.

It's Cheyenne.

Lets look at the numbers and the reasons.

Motor vehicle theft is a growing problem in the United States.

932,329 vehicles were reported stolen to law enforcement in 2021.

That's quite a bump. The number is up 6% from 2020 and up 17% from 2019.

There are many reasons for the higher numbers, one might surprise you.

I bet you thought that newer, high tech locking systems were tougher to break into.

As it turns out those keyless entry and push-button ignitions are easier to hack than the old manual key systems.

Literally, your key fob is electronically hacked.

The video below explains how.

Once they are in your car, and driving off, they now have the passcodes to all your other electronic devices that you synced up to your car. Phones, iPad, and laptops.

So now they are into your personal information.

Owning a car in Wyoming is a lot safer than owning one in Denver, or one of many other major cities.

Still, Cheyenne ranks as having the highest motor vehicle theft rate.

A grand total of 411 cars, trucks, and SUVs were reported stolen in the metro area in 2021, or about 407.5 for every 100,000 people.

That's more than the state wide average of 161.9 per 100,000 people the same year, the 12th lowest rate among states.

This data comes from the National Insurance Crime Bureau's 2021 Hot Spots Vehicle Theft Report.

Location might be key to why Cheyenne is the worst place for both car theft and home burglary.

Two interstates and a rail road system cross there, plus other back highways, bringing in drifters from all over the nation.

The rest of Wyoming, by comparison, is far more isolated and only suffers from local crime.
