A rifle stolen and recovered last week belonged to a Natrona County sheriff's deputy.

That's according to Natrona County Sherrif's Office Sgt. Aaron Shatto, who serves as a spokesperson for the office.

Shatto said the AR-15 was taken from a vehicle used for traveling, not a patrol vehicle. The car the rifle was taken from does not have secured storage compartments.

The deputy made an honest mistake, and the issue has been dealt with, Shatto said. Shatto did not say what, if any, disciplinary measures have been taken. The sheriff's office does not disclose personnel issues.

Last week, Casper police arrested 18-year-old Branden Brimmer on two recommended charges of aggravated burglary and one charge of conspiracy.

Court documents allege that Brimmer and two juveniles took firearms from vehicles parked on Zinnia Street and Little Moon Trail.

In the Zinnia Street burglary, a bullet-resistant vest was also stolen.
