Is Luke Skywalker Gay? Mark Hamill’s Answer Surprises ‘Star Wars’ Fans
In the context of a galaxy that's host to talking robots, fleets of Teddy bear warriors and telekinesis, Star Wars star Mark Hamill is reminding fans that a gay character is not inconceivable.
In an interview with The Sun published yesterday (March 3), the man behind Luke Skywalker said fans have been asking if the series' most famous hero — who's never been romantically attached at any point since the release of 1977's A New Hope — might be gay. Hamill's answer? Of course, not that the detail would change anything.
"Fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school... I’m afraid to come out,'" he said. "They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer."
"If you think Luke is gay, of course he is," Hamill added. "You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves."
Hamill's take follows The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams' remarks that a gay character wouldn't so much as elicit a blink on Hoth or Tatooine. At last week's US-Ireland Alliance’s annual Oscar Wilde Awards, Abrams told reporters there's no logical choice but to eventually include a visibly gay character, according to The Daily Beast.
“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility," he said. "So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world."
"When I talk about inclusivity, it’s not excluding gay characters," he added. "It’s about inclusivity. So of course [I foresee a gay character]."
What do you think of the possibility that Luke Skywalker is gay? Does it negate fan theories that he's potentially the father of new hero, Rey? Sound off in the comments.
