Avril Lavigne Shares Lyme Disease Diagnosis: ‘I Thought I Was Dying’
Avril Lavigne opened up about her scary battle with Lyme Disease to PEOPLE magazine.
The singer explained that during a Las Vegas trip last October, she didn't feel like celebrating much.
"I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed," she told the magazine. "My friends asked, 'What's wrong?' I didn't know."
She was soon diagnosed with Lyme Disease and tells PEOPLE, "I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months."
Avril believes she was bitten by a tick last spring, thus contracting the disease. Avril is recovering in Ontario, where she "spends time with family, watches movies and keeps up with fans through social media."
However, details of the disease underscore how serious it is.
"I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move," Avril says. "I thought I was dying."
The singer first publicly referenced her health issues back in December, when she privately DMed a fan on Twitter, writing, “I feel bad because I haven’t been able to say anything to the fans to let them [know] why I’ve been absent. I’m torn as I’m quite private… I’m not feeling well. I’m having some health issues. So please keep me in your prayers.”
At the time, fans responded by trending #GetWellSoonAvril” and “#PrayForAvril."
Although we imagine the singer's been through an incredibly scary time, we're glad to hear that she's doing well. We look forward to having Avril back at 100 percent, and have her in our thoughts during this time.
