PHOTOS: Northern Lights Look Stunning Behind Devils Tower

This past episode of Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, was one of the best seen in several decades.

Many great sky pictures were taken.

But it does help to have a great background.

What better place than Devils Tower in North East Wyoming?

Seeing it in person must have been quite a moving sight.

The photo above shows just a silhouette of the tower.

This allows us to focus on what's happening to the sky above.

We rarely see this sort of display this far south.

The fact that it happened on such a clear night is astounding.

Those lights in the foreground are from Campstool Ranch, owned by the Driskill family.

You might be familiar with Ogden Driskill.

His family were the first white people to settle in this area and have been there ever since.

They own most of the land around the tower.

Ogden was a boy and remembers when the movie Close Encounters was shot there.

In the photo above Christina captures just a little green of the landscape that goes with the green in the sky.

But why just look at the tower?

It's amazing just to point the camera up and see what happens.

Christina took several shots like the one below.

This last one has powerlines running across our view.

That's okay.

What's happening behind them is mind-blowing.

We have the full color of the land and the sky on fire above.

The tower is on the far east side of Wyoming.

Let's go just about as far west as we can go to see another one of Wyoming's amazing features.

WOW! This is AMAZING.

If you've been watching social media during this past weekend you've seen a lot of photos of an epic northern lights display.

Here in Wyoming one photographer managed to stay up late and watch from one of Wyoming's most famous vantage points.

Old Faithful.

Stella Cole of Dubois, Wyoming captured these unique photos and posted them on her Facebook page as well as Wyoming Through The Lens.

This meant waiting long enough for the geyser to erupt with the stars and northern lights in the background.

These are truly once-in-a-generation photos.

I'm not aware of anyone who has captured both the Northern Lights and Old Faithful at the same time.

The opportunity to catch something this spectacular, at this intensity of aurora activity, will not happen again for a long time.

When it does happen again let's hope that someone like Stella is around to capture it.
