Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Spinoff In Development at ABC
If it weren’t clear already, we’ve officially entered the superhero TV arms race. Not content with Daredevil or its three followups into The Defenders, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has officially begun development of a new potential spinoff for ABC, but who might take the lead, and what does it mean for Agent Carter?
Nobody panic just yet, as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has yet to receive a third-season order (it’s very likely, though), and ABC’s pilot season pickups would affect the possibility, but Entertainment Weekly reports Marvel has has begun eying a potential spinoff for a member of Coulson’s world. No details are yet known as to which character might earn their own series, and we’re told that no Season 2 episodes will act as a backdoor pilot, though its remaining installments will conclusively lay groundwork for whatever the spinoff would be.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. EP Jeffrey Bell is reportedly spearheading the project, along with series writer writer Paul Zbyszewski. Although eyed for fall, it isn’t yet known if the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff could take the place of Agent Carter at midseason, as Peggy apparently has “a roughly 60 percent chance of returning for a second season.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 presses on with next Tuesday’s “Cavalry,” but who might take center stage for their own spinoff, should ABC continue development? Is the timing of any coincidence to Deathlok’s return? What of Skye and her new Quake-ing abilities, or the Inhumans we’ve met thus far? Ward’s Warriors? Mockingbird and the “Real S.H.I.E.L.D.”? Who, we ask? WHO?
