To some there is no down time when it comes to fishing, fishing all year in Montana to some is crazy but with the proper gear you are just fine.

There is one big purchase I think is necessary when it comes to winter fly fishing and that is boots that allow for the use of cleats.

They can run anywhere from $100 to $200-plus, but a worth it purchase if you even plan to test the waters in the winter just a few times. Safety first!

Nowadays too many fishers prefer the rubber sole instead of felt, as some areas do not allow felt bottoms as things can travel and harmful algae can be transported.

I also recommend getting a drill for putting them in, you can with a screw driver but it's a bit more tedious.
