The Natrona County School District board of trustees approved the sale of the former North Casper Elementary School to an American Legion post at its meeting Monday.

The board accepted the $200,000 bid from the American Legion George W. Vroman Post 2 for the building at 1014 Glenarm St.

Trustee Dave Applegate said the bid was below the appraised value, but much more than the $85,000 bid from Poor Boys Holdings, LLC, which is managed in part by former Poor Boys Steakhouse owner and state Rep. Pat Sweeney.

The district probably would not receive a higher bid, Applegate said.

That, coupled with the $30,000 to $50,000 annual cost of maintaining the empty building, justified the sale, he said.

Michael Jennings, the district's executive director of human resources, said later the 34,525-square-foot property was appraised for $326,000. The building itself is 28,744 square feet, Jennings said.

The American Legion post has been meeting at the Casper Senior Center, 1831 E. Fourth St., According to its website.

Two weeks ago, the trustees approved the sale of the former Jefferson Elementary School, now the district's Special Education Service Center, to Excel Academy for $317,023.17, according to the district's Board Infrastructure Planning Committee. The building at East Fifth and South Jefferson streets was appraised at $355,000.
